Residents of Naseby Avenue
Who are the Residents of Naseby Avenue? We are normal residents, from different backgrounds and of varying ages.
We officially formed in 2002 to enable us to apply for various funding as a recognised Residents Association.
Since forming we have done what has been locally important to us as a group. We have applied for cash grants so we could have fencing and security lighting to make us all feel safer in our homes.
It has been important from the start to add our own personalities to what ever we do, so we can take ownership and pride in any projects. We chose to continue to make our environment a nicer place to live by adding a few flower beds and displaying hanging baskets. We found ourselves taking part in the In Bloom events going on around the country.
Continuing in our usual fashion we were looking for something different, something unusual to meet our unique style. Little did we know what was just around the corner. We were about to embark on our biggest challenge yet.
We were asked to put on a display for Tatton Park and actually agreed. Did we really know what we were taking on? Who knows? But we weren’t going to give up without a fight.
The design was put together. We needed to decide what plants we wanted and where to purchase them. Hang on why buy the plants lets grow our own from seed. Never done this before, how hard can it be? Actually not as easy as it sounds as we soon found out.
Where are we going to grow all these plants? I think we need a greenhouse. Send the Chairperson out with her orders – Go and work your charms and don’t come back without a greenhouse. Luckily B&Q have taken pity on Margaret; I think she showed them a photo of the group.
Right sorted, seeds, greenhouse, and a little soil. You must be joking this was the easy bit. I think someone forgot to mention planting to take place around the clock. That means eat, sleep and work plants. No time for cooking, mud pies have will do.
Hard work done, let nature do the rest, some sun and a little rain; or maybe not, rain, rain and guess what some more rain.
Well the hard work paid off and we won silver medal, we can’t believe it.
So all we want to say is if we can do it so can you. We are now working on new projects now some which involve the Scarman Trust, so watch this space.

Alongside the Allotments
Alongside the Allotments at Hough End, where Chorlton Brook runs past the Police Stables on Mauldeth Road West, there is several acres of deciduous woodland seriously in need of preservation and some regeneration.
The Garden Kitchen Project
The Garden Kitchen is a volunteer-run youth project which will open in September 2007, on a community allotment in Levenshulme.

The ‘Checkmate Project’ was set up to allow talented local artists, actors and writers who were stunted in their development because of social and economic barriers, to develop a piece of professional theatre from their personal experiences.

The Dyslexic by Nature group was formed on 6th June 2006, thanks to the kind support and encouragement of Sue Bell at Chorlton Workshop.

Purple Expressive Arts grew out of a Presentation Skills training day that Surestart put on for a group of their volunteers at the North City Family and Fitness Centre. The day left them wanting more and Surestart funded a series of regular weekly session

All FM 96.9 is the licensed community radio Station for South Central and East Manchester. All FM has been broadcasting to Ardwick, longsight and Levenshulme for the past four years under the Government’s ‘Community radio pilot scheme’.
