Launch of the Sheung Lok, Forever Happy Internet Cafe
Chorlton-on-Medlock Tenants and Residents are highly motivated and committed to improving their community and have developed a number of initiatives over the past few months. In the summer, in partnership with Manchester City Council and The University of Manchester they organised a World Cup Event and family fun day in their local park, Gartside Gardens. They have also worked with Medlock Primary School and organised an Easter Egg Hunt and Fun Day for the young people at the school.
The group then decided that they would like to set up an internet cafe in the community, as there are many homes in the ward without access to a computer. The group wanted to create a space that would not only provide residents with the opportunity to have a community space to socialise and network which has been lacking in the past but would provide young people with the opportunity to complete homework and residents the opportunity to gain experience in the use of computers.
The group approached The University of Manchester about what support the University could supply to the project. The University kindly agreed to donate 5 computers, 2 printers, 2 web cams and furniture for the internet cafe. The university have also agreed to network the computers and will provide on-going maintenance and a help line for the residents to use if there are any faults. The university will also be providing training for the volunteers that will be managing the cafe. They have also agreed to run short courses for basic computing for residents at the cafe.
Manchester Digital Development Agency have agreed to provide support on website design for the group and training courses for the community and have supported the group to secure European funding of £4,000.
As you can see this is a fantastic project and the first that the University has set up in the community. This has been achieved through joint partnership working with the University of Manchester, Chorlton-on-Medlock Tenants and Residents Association, Manchester Digital Development Agency, South Manchester Regeneration Team and Ardwick Ward Co-ordination.
The group are delighted that the Lord Mayor has accepted the invitation to attend the launch and would like him to officially open the internet cafe on 23 January 2006 at 4.00 pm.

All FM 96.9 is the licensed community radio Station for South Central and East Manchester. All FM has been broadcasting to Ardwick, longsight and Levenshulme for the past four years under the Government’s ‘Community radio pilot scheme’.
