Alongside the Allotments
Alongside the Allotments at Hough End, where Chorlton Brook runs past the Police Stables on Mauldeth Road West, there is several acres of deciduous woodland seriously in need of preservation and some regeneration.
Leon Patsalides, a local naturalist is hoping to plant several species of coppiced trees such as ash, willow and hazel there to be used for future work and with the right access maybe even create a nature trail or small picnic area.
The enchanting woodland and meandering stream at Hough End Clough is situated between the junctions of Withington Road and Alexandra Road South. At this point Gor-Platt brook meets, what is known locally as Chorlton Brook, that actually feeds from Gorton brook by way of Platt Fields and then finally at Chorlton Ease into the river Mersey.
With its classical serpentine course, sandy banks and the surrounding mixed woodlands, stretching along some 3 acres of land, that is conveniently situated alongside the Hough End Centre, the playing fields and the new rugby club stadium. To the north lies the edge of the residential belt of Whalley Range, with the Scout's Group at the top of Withington Road, and to the north-west - the Nell Lane estate with Chorlton High School; St. Margaret's School and the Oakwood academy close by.
The area of Lower Hough End Clough, formerly a park belonging to the Egerton Estate, is home to a rich variety of wildlife, flora and fauna with birds such as the spotted woodpecker, heron, kingfisher and yellow wagtails to name but a few. According to local archivists and environmentalists, the area has had a reputation as a site of scientific and botanical interest in the past. The small brook has occasionally supported fish but more recently, perhaps due to pollution or local predators such as the grey heron and kingfisher, they now seem strangely absent. Naturalists have observed that the sandy banks of the brook are home to other species of mammal such as rats, field-mice, foxes and occasionally badgers.
With the assistance and support of the local council and John McGann, parks and leisure officer for Chorlton & Whalley Range, some funding and local assistance are currently being sought to help finance and develop the regeneration project.
