Why an Over 50's Group?
Because time and time again the questions of 'there are no facilities for us', 'there is nothing for us to do', no one is interested in us!', there is nowhere in Whalley Range for us to go'.In response to this, an Open Day was arranged at Tangmere Court, followed by an invitation to the Carlton Social and Bowling Club to look into the possibilities and attractions people wanted within the area. Out of which a programmme of events was devised and a consensus of opinion that a Thursday afternoon between 2-4.30pm would be the most popular day of the week.
Many requests were put on paper, high on the list being trips out to theatres, cinemas, stately homes, galleries and the arts. In order to carry out such ideas we are looking into obtaining some sort of financial funding. The Manchester City Council had provided a starter grant but the Group has to be self financing and therefore its future existence must depend upon the membership of the Group, thus a small chanrge of £2 to cover tea, coffee and the rest of the room.
The Group has been entertained with karaoke, teaching ballroom dancing, a sing along, a talk from a Location Manager from Granada TV and teh opportunity to play cards, board games, darts and bowls.
Our aim is to bond people together and provide a worthwhile opening for all those who wish to meet and greet other, in a safe and comfortable environment, to see places and take part in activities both mentally and physically. One of our gentlemen, who had never danced before achieved a remarkable quickstep and has revised his bowling skills. We want our older people to come out of their homes, we do not want anyone to be lonely and we want ideas or suggestions of activities or interests which would be of help to others.
