Chatter about Chatterbox

ChatterThis is what we are being told at meetings everywhere. The chatter is exciting. It’s exciting because at last something is happening in this part of Manchester to help put the LIFE back into community life. It is exciting too for those of us involved to hear that Chatterbox is encouraging others in their endeavour to care about where they live.

The original idea was to get information into each home about where residents could find help, advice, leisure activities and training or education opportunities. It soon became clear that the barrier to all of these was one of accessibility. For instance the nearest training centres are a couple of miles away.

With the help of grants from the Church Urban Fund, Community Chest, local donations and the sheer hard work of committed volunteers the Chatterbox Project now runs a programme of activities that that all take place in St Mark’s Church Hall and includes: Chair based Exercises, Computer Courses, Parent and Toddler Group and beginning in April, in our brand new kitchen, a Basic Cooking Course.

Along the way we have also helped to begin the refurbishment of the church hall and a few weeks ago we had the willing assistance from young people on a course at City College sponsored by the Prince’s Trust.

Plans for the future include a gardening club setting, up a safe play park for under fives and reclaiming unused land for a wild-life garden.

We are truly grateful for the involvement of local businesses and various groups like Zest for Life, St Marks Church, Manchester City Council, Sure Start, The Scarman Trust Manchester, and the Diocese of Manchester. Without their on-going support and encouragement The Chatterbox Project would not be what it is right now.
