Getting Self-propelled ‘Chequebook’

You are on to something good. So what lies ahead, and how can you make the best of it?

Start Small: Think Big
What you begin with may be a one-off – something which involves a handful of others besides yourself, using resources within immediate reach, not depending much on outside support, getting results that everyone
can see are worth the effort and sharing the credit.

That might be as far as it goes, to the general satisfaction. But perhaps you have woken everyone up in the process, and can see other possibilities that could be followed up, based on growing mutual confidence. Then you will want to tap into additional resources, and perhaps get some expert advice.

Whether you stop short or go further, be forewarned. There are problems as well as opportunities; although problems sometimes turn into opportunities that break new ground and surmount obstacles that had baffled everyone else.

You, and others interested, will be investing time and skills and you want to make sure it is energy well spent. This booklet includes don’ts as well as do’s, and points the way to tap into other resources besides your own, if and when you decide you need them.

The booklet includes evidence that local initiatives, starting from scratch, can succeed. Your idea may be in line with one or other of them, or may be breaking new ground. But they may help to get the feel of what it is like being called a doer, a ‘moving spirit’ who gets others joining in.
