Summary
All over the country, people from all walks of life have decided to improve their communities and neighbourhoods. The projects are as individual and varied as those who have been inspired to do them: growing medicinal plants on a Council Estate; getting homeless people into discussion groups; restoring a walled garden in a local park.
We in the Portobello area of West London – now referred to by estate agents as part of “Notting Hill” – helped change our area from being one dominated by the sale of sex and drugs on our streets to one people want to live in. Part of that work was to refurbish a small area of public open space.
This book sums up the lessons we have learnt in our struggle. It is for you if you have decided to take matters into your own hands and get things done. It is equally relevant to those who live in the city or the country. It’s not the only way to get things done, but is an effective one. It is packed with the tools and techniques that will help you do the job.
The author, James Caplin, (a Scarman Award Winner) wrote the book after leading a group who, with the help of a Housing Association, worked with their local Council to transform an area of run-down public space.
